Declutter Twitter with Tweetdeck

Twitter has, shall we say, experienced a certain "metamorphosis" over the past year that has impacted the site's navigation. However, with over 460 million active users, the platform still provides countless opportunities to grow your network and stay connected with the right people at the right time.

But, you don't have to aimlessly sift through the app to find what you're looking for, and there are tools to help you keep an eye on what matters most. Our top pick is a free tool called Tweetdeck, which has been a tried-and-true organization tool since 2008. We've collected our top 5 tips for leveraging Tweetdeck to help you master Twitter for professional use.

1. Organize your columns: TweetDeck allows you to create multiple columns for different aspects of your Twitter account. You can create a column for mentions, direct messages, and hashtags related to your industry, making it simple to access the information most relevant to you.

2. Schedule your tweets: Around the holidays, we produced a few social media "do's and don'ts" where we recommended that it might not be the best idea to stay up during odd hours of the night tweeting your most personal thoughts. TweetDeck has a scheduling feature that allows you to create and schedule tweets in advance, which is a great way to save you time and produce a consistent stream of content. Just make sure to schedule your tweets at times when your audience is most active.

3. Monitor your "brand": You can now keep an eye on your notifications, mentions, and direct messages in real-time without having to bounce between your feed and other tabs. This feature is particularly useful if you're engaging with or responding to multiple people or accounts to see how they respond! To do this, click "Add column" and select "Notifications" and "Messages."

4. Use search filters: TweetDeck has powerful search filters that allow you to narrow down your search results. You can filter by keywords, hashtags, location, and more. This is particularly useful for finding relevant conversations to join or for monitoring specific topics related to your industry. Select "Add column," then "Search," and choose your desired search filters.

5. Monitor competitors: Social media is chock-full of useful information, and seeing what your competitors are talking about is a pot of gold. You can specifically choose which accounts to monitor by hitting "Add column," selecting "Profiles" and looking up the account or user's handle. This will allow you to keep an eye on their activities, such as new product launches, promotions, campaigns, and who they're engaging with. Ultimately, keeping an eye on what your competitors are doing can give you the opportunity to get involved, make a splash, and grow your network!
